Inspiration 5 | How Where You Live Shapes Who You Are
Full article
We like to believe we are defined by our choices, our values, and our personalities. But the truth is simpler and more powerful: where you live doesn’t just determine what you can do — it quietly sculpts who you become.
For years, my husband and I were proud “flatlanders” in Texas. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the landscape is exactly what it sounds like: flat, hot, and humid. We’d squeeze in runs at sunset because daytime heat was brutal. We hunted for 5Ks, only to find most were geared toward kids. On weekends, we often stayed inside with the AC blasting, watching shows, because the scenery outside was mostly concrete, highways, and buildings.
We did what we could — logging miles around Lake Grapevine for some semblance of trail running — but the environment simply didn’t support the outdoor identity we craved. It’s hard to call yourself a hiker, climber, mountaineer, or skier when the terrain offers so little opportunity. You adapt. You make peace with it. But part of you knows something is missing.
Then we moved to Colorado.
The difference is staggering. Colorado boasts 56 Fourteeners (peaks over 14,000 feet) — more than any other state. If you flattened those mountains, they’d stretch the state to the size of Texas. They rise into a breathtaking world of valleys, caves, alpine lakes, ridges, and endless trails. Suddenly, everything changed. We could wake up and choose to hike, climb, ski, snowboard, or run at elevation. The same people — us — were now spending weekends chasing sunrises from mountaintops, learning to navigate snow, and earning every breath taking through sweat and effort.
We became adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, “real” runners, and active people. What once was out of reach was now woven into our identity. Where we live now and what we do aligns with our goals to be better, stronger, and healthier people. Rather than pushing ourselves in a gym, we get lost in the vast beauty on long hikes. Instead of forcing ourselves to stay fit, we just go outside on adventures and explore the world!
This isn’t just about hobbies. What you do regularly becomes who you are. The place you call home either opens doors to that version of yourself or quietly keeps them closed.
Of course, not everyone has the chance to move to their ideal environment. Many people build beautiful lives in places that don’t perfectly “fit in.” If that’s you, don’t let your current limitations define your worth. Keep nurturing the person you want to become right where you are — through small habits, weekend escapes, books, training, planning, and dreaming.
But if the opportunity ever knocks — if a door opens to a place that lets you breathe, grow, and fully express who you’re meant to be — take the leap.
Because sometimes the bravest thing you can do is change your address so you can finally become your true self.
Where you live matters. Choose wisely when you can.
